European motorcycle market: motorcycles and scooters sells well, sales soar for 50 cc
In the first quarter of 2018, registrations of mopeds and motorcycles in Europe fell by 6.1%. The aggregate number of motorcycles and mopeds for the first three months of the year, in fact, stops at 240,924 units in the first quarter of 2018, with a decrease of 6.1% compared to the same period of the previous year, according to the latest figures released by ACEM, the European Association of Motorcycle Manufacturers.
This negative value is the result of the sharp fall in the number of mopeds, which on a European basis recorded a stunning 40.2% fall. On the other hand, vehicles over 50 ccdid not go badly, with an encouraging +4.7%. Of course, turnover is also achieved with 50 cc mopeds that if – in raw numbers – are about one-fifth of higher capacity vehicles (37,071 pieces compared to 203,853), are also the most profitable two wheels for manufacturers.
Overall registrations (including motorcycles, scooters and mopeds) increased in some of the major European markets, including Spain (32,170 motorcycles and mopeds, +11.5%) and the United Kingdom (24,609 units, +5.6%), remained stable in Italy (49,993 units, -0.6%) and decreased in France (47,081 units, -8%) and Germany (36,788 units, -13.5%).
Motorcycle registrations up by 4.7%
In the first three months of the year, the number of motorcycles registered in the EU reached 203,853 units. This represents an increase of 4.7% compared to the same period in 2016. With 46,126 units (+1.4%). Italy confirmed its position as the largest motorcycle market in Europe, followed by France (36,979 motorcycles, +9.1%), Germany(36,058 motorcycles, +1.9%), Spain (29,063 motorcycles, +16.7%) and the United Kingdom (23,485 motorcycles, +7.4%).
Registrations in the mopeds segment reached 37,071 units in the first 3 months of 2017 (-40.2%). The largest moped market in Europe is France (10,102 units, -41.5%), followed by the Netherlands (8,856 units, -35.3%), Italy (3,867 units, -19.4%), Belgium (3,458 units, -14.8%) and Spain (3,107 units, -21.4%).
EU registrations of electric vehicles increased by 7.1%
Combined registrations of electric mopeds, motorcycles and quadricycles reached 8,281 units in the first 3 months of 2018. This represents an increase of 51.2% compared to the same period of 2017. The largest European markets in terms of volume were France with a total of 2,150 electric vehicles, followed by the Netherlands (1,703 units),Belgium (1,472 units), Spain (1,258 units) and Italy (592 units).
Between January and March 2018, 1,726 electric motorcycles were registered in the EU (+118.5% year-on-year). The largest European markets for electric motorcycles wereFrance (732 units, +228%), Spain (311 units, +161%), the Netherlands (202 units, +304%) and Germany (173 vehicles, -10.4%).
The registration of electric mopeds reached 5,824 units (+50.8% compared to the first three months of 2017). The main European markets for mopeds were as follows: theNetherlands (1,501 units, +54.7%), Belgium (1,366 units, +91.9%), France (1,204 units, -11.6%), Spain (908 units, +197%) and Italy (310 units, +58.2%).
